Buddleia, Chinese lilac… Buddleia has many names. The shrub or semi-shrub is popular with many garden owners mainly because of its very lush flowering between July and September. However, the plant is also the perfect choice when it comes to closing an unsightly gap or covering up garbage cans or a gray concrete wall - Buddleja davidii in particular is considered to be both strong and fast-growing.
The summer lilac needs a lot of spacePlanting distance depends on species and variety
Most varieties of Buddleja davidii grow up to 300 centimeters high and 200 centimeters wide. For these varieties you should plan a planting distance of 150 centimeters if you want to plant the shrub as a solitaire. If, on the other hand, a group or hedge planting is planned, a distance of between 80 and 100 centimeters is recommended. Buddleja alternifolia also reaches similar dimensions and should be planted at the same distance - however, this species is not as easy to cut back as B. davidii, which is why the dimensions are more likely to be observed.
tips
If you want to cultivate the summer lilac in a pot, it is better to use smaller varieties such as 'Nanho' or species such as the ball summer lilac (Buddleja globosa) and the yellow summer lilac (Buddleja x weyeriana).
