Buddleia has become an integral part of many gardens: it is very popular with gardeners, mainly because of its lush and long-lasting flowering. In addition, the shrub can be excellently combined with other shrubs, but also with perennials, herbs, ground cover and grasses.

Purple summer lilac can be beautifully combined with white flowering plants

Solitary or group planting?

Both as a solitaire and in a group - for example in a finely tuned perennial bed - the summer lilac cuts a fine figure. In the case of group plantings in particular, however, you should make sure that the focus is on the plant and that other perennials, shrubs, grasses and annual summer flowers are used as underplanting or framing. In addition, the summer lilac is very suitable for hedge planting, where you plant different colored varieties or different shrubs together. Always keep to the recommended planting distance.

The most beautiful combinations

The table gives you some suggestions for underplanting the summer lilac. The shrub also harmonises very well with grasses such as egret feather grass (Stipa gigantea), moor grass (Molinia caerulea), feather bristle grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) or Chinese reed (Miscanthus sinensis).
