Washing leeks is not always easy. Since the vegetable has many layers like an onion, soil and small stones can hide and are difficult to remove. With the right technique, however, it is not at all difficult to wash off all the subtenants and prepare the clean leeks for further processing.

Leeks should be thoroughly washed under running water

What is leek?

This vegetable is closely related to onions, garlic and wild garlic. The stalks are white in color at the base, have a whitish to light green shaft and dark green leaves that fan out upwards.

Always buy leeks whole, because only then will they retain their full aroma. Look for deep green foliage with no yellow discoloration as this is an indication of older, overstocked stems.

Prepare leek

  1. First cut off the roots.
  2. Remove the outer, mostly unsightly leaves.
  3. Halve the bar lengthwise.

Wash the leek thoroughly

Now the vegetables can be easily fanned out:

  1. Wash the leek thoroughly under running water, closed end up. This means that small stones and dirt particles can be easily rinsed off.
  2. Then turn the rod over and clean the bottom.
  3. Shake off the leek and pat dry with kitchen paper.

cut leek.

How the leeks are cut depends on the recipe. If you want to prepare vegetables, cut the sticks into fine rings. To gratinate, divide them diagonally into pieces.

If, despite thorough preparatory work, you still discover soil residue, place the cut sticks in a sieve and rinse them again under running water. Shake off and pat dry to avoid accidentally spilling too much liquid into the dish.

tips

You can use leeks in the kitchen as a substitute for onions. The classic winter vegetable tastes a little milder than the tubers and is also easier to digest.
