A weed foil saves you tedious weeding in the garden, because it prevents the emergence of unwanted weeds. In order for the effort to pay off, good preparation is important. This also includes choosing the right material thickness.

Mulch fleece has a width between 100 and 120 centimeters. The thickness of the material depends on the type of use of the area. The more this is used, the thicker the weed fleece (€21.70) should be. The indication grams per square meter provides information about the strength.

150 g/m2 stands for an extra strong fleece, which suppresses any weed growth. Fleece with a weight of 120 g/m2 is used on slopes, in rock gardens and on garden paths. Materials with 50 to 80 g/m2 are sufficient for normal kitchen and ornamental gardens.

The area must be free of weeds, root remains and stones so that the foil is not destroyed. It is not advisable to place the weed control mat on top of weeds. Paths are subject to greater stress than beds. Here it is all the more important to attach the fleece webs to the ground with enough anchors. Buy a little more material than you need. The panels may protrude beyond the surface, so you can fold over the edges. This reduces the risk of the ground anchors causing cracks.

Use a sharp knife to cut cross-shaped slits in the fleece at the points where plants are to grow later. Dig a sufficiently large planting hole and plant the plants. So that weeds do not grow through the incisions, you need to press the fabric tightly to the neck of the plant. Cover the entire area with soil to create a natural appearance. An alternative to garden soil is a five centimeter thick layer of bark mulch.
