It is important to fill the gaps between pavers and slabs with the right material. This is the only way to prevent weed growth in the long term. There are basically two ways to fill terrace joints.

Terrace joints can be filled with mortar or sand

preparations

In order to permanently prevent the growth of weeds, you should clean the joints thoroughly. In the case of extreme moss growth and stubborn growth of weeds, it is advisable to first remove the paving stones or slabs from the terrace. Loosen the root weeds with a rake and make sure that no root fragments are left in the soil. Robust weeds such as couch grass sprout from such remains after a short time. After cleaning, fill in the depressions with sand and lay the stones again.

joint materials

When filling joints, you have the choice between fixed and loose joints. Both variants have advantages and disadvantages.

pavement joint mortar

This material consists of epoxy resin and sand. It is used for solid grouting and results in a so-called drainage joint. This is permeable to water, resistant to frost and road salt and stops weed growth. Mix the grout according to package directions.

Instructions for filling:

  • Spread on the joints and work in with a rubber squeegee
  • Spread diagonally to the joint so that the filling does not sweep out again
  • Sweep off excess mortar residue with a soft coconut broom
  • Clean patio tiles carefully
  • if it rains, stretch a film over the ground

The grout will have dried after about 24 hours so that you can remove the protection again. The surface can be loaded after about seven days. If you want to use the terrace beforehand, we recommend proceeding in rows.

Weed-inhibiting sand

This material offers a possibility of loose jointing. It is swept damp into the gaps and is not suitable for public but for private terraces due to the slightly lower supporting effect. Quartz sand (€15.85) is a quick and cheap way to fill the joints. It is important that the joint sand is effective against weeds.

Another advantage is that broken bricks can be quickly replaced. However, the substrate is washed out with a water jet during cleaning, so you have to sweep the sand in regularly.
