It's much too cold outside for Fuchsia in winter. If the picturesque subshrubs are granted a suitable winter quarters, the lavish blossom festival will be repeated next summer in all its glory. Read this guide to learn how to overwinter fuchsia properly.

Preparation in autumn - instructions for tubs and beds
Gradual preparation from early autumn sets the course for overwintering. How to prepare your fuchsias for the coming winter season:
- beginning of September: Do not fertilize fuchsia in beds and tubs
- mid-October: pour more sparingly
If it rains continuously in early autumn, please place fuchsia in a pot under a canopy.
Prune fuchsia before storing
Before putting them into winter quarters, subject your fuchsias to a vigorous pruning. The effort is worth it in two respects. In the course of wintering, the subshrubs shed their leaves anyway. At the same time, the garden shears kill diseased and pest-infested shoots. How to do it right:
- Best time: before the first heavy frost (early November in most regions of Germany)
- pruning: Thin out diseased, weak twigs, cut back healthy twigs by a third
- Defoliate: strip off all leaves
- Dig out: Dig up the fuchsia in the bed and put it in a pot with unfertilized coconut soil
Fuchsia in tubs can overwinter in the container and are spared the stress of transplanting.
Overwinter Fuchsia dark and frost-free
Because fuchsias do without their leaves, the summer sun worshipers can overwinter in the poorly lit location. Alternatively, bright overwintering is possible, but there is a risk that your fuchsia will be exhausted by the growth of long horny shoots. The rule of thumb is: the darker, the cooler. The following options are shortlisted:
- Basement and windowless garage with temperatures from 2° to 8° Celsius
- Conservatory, staircase, bedroom with temperatures from 3° to 12° Celsius
Are all potential winter quarters in the house occupied? Then you can overwinter your fuchsias in a special tent with a frost guard. The translucent construction consists of UV-resistant greenhouse film (€15.90) and is available in various sizes. There is also a place for other cold-sensitive flower beauties, such as Dipladenia or Mandevilla.
tips
The care regime is on the back burner when you overwinter deciduous flowers, like fuchsia. Without the foliage, the water requirement drops to a minimum. Water the plants in small sips when the soil is noticeably dry. Please do not apply fertilizer.
