From August to November you can pick apples in your own garden. Some apple varieties can be stored for months. Others spoil quickly. You can preserve the delicious fruit very well by preserving it with or without sugar. We'll tell you how.

Canning apples without sugar
Preserving ensures the necessary shelf life, sugar as a preservative is not absolutely necessary.
Ingredients:
- 1 kilo of apples
- 1 liter of water
- juice of half a lemon
- Half a vanilla bean and/or some ginger
preparation
- First sterilize the jars.
- Wash apples, peel, remove core and cut into wedges.
- Drizzle with lemon juice.
- Boil water and add vanilla or ginger.
- Fill the glasses with apples and fill up with hot water. The fruit must be completely covered.
- Close jars tightly and place in a large pot of water (soaking pot). They should be about three quarters covered.
- Bring the water to a boil and leave the jars in the water bath for half an hour.
- then remove the glasses and let them cool down.
Boil apples with sugar in the oven
The addition of sugar makes the cooked apples even more aromatic. You can dose the sweetness according to your own taste.
ingredients
- 1 kilo of apples
- 1 liter of water
- 150 to 200 grams of sugar
- juice of half a lemon
- To taste: raisins and cinnamon
preparation
- Sterilize jars.
- Wash and peel the apples, remove the core and cut into cubes.
- Drizzle with lemon juice.
- Boil the sugar, water and cinnamon.
- Place the diced apples, mixed with the raisins if desired, in the glasses. There should be at least two centimeters free space below the edge.
- Top up with sugar water until the apples are completely covered.
- Place filled glasses in a roasting pan.
- Pour about three centimeters of water into the roaster.
- Place in the oven on the lowest rack.
- Heat to 180 degrees and watch for bubbles.
- As soon as this is the case, switch off and leave the jars in the oven for another half hour.
- Take out and let cool.
tips
If you use unwaxed apples, you don't have to throw away the apple peel. Dried, they are a healthy and low-calorie snack. Chopped up, the peels can be used to prepare delicious apple tea.
