You hear noises in the attic at 3 a.m. and you suspect a marten behind the noise? But is that even an appropriate time for a marten? Find out below when martens are active and when they are rarely encountered.

When are martens active?
Martens are nocturnal. However, the precise time at which they leave their shelter varies from animal to animal - as with humans, there are early risers and late risers. Some martens are already on the move at dusk, while others only set off in the dark.
At what time of the year are martens particularly active?
In summer, many car owners complain about bitten cables in the engine compartment - this is no coincidence: the mating season of martens extends from the beginning of July to the beginning of September and at this time the males are particularly aggressive and react violently to the presence of competitors, e.g. in the warm engine compartment . In April / June, on the other hand, you can hear clumsy marten cubs taking their first steps.
Where can martens be found?
In our country, martens usually mean two species: the stone marten, also known as the house marten, and the pine marten. While the house marten, as its name suggests, likes to stay near houses, the pine marten prefers forests and meadows and is rarely seen near people. Beech martens, on the other hand, prefer to live in attics, in walls or in barns.

Martens are also active in winter because they do not hibernate. However, they reduce their activities to save energy.
