You own this one houseplant with the wonderful flower and are afraid that the plant could die soon? Then let's get to the scissors. By taking cuttings from your specimen and propagating them, you ensure the survival of unusual characteristics of your houseplant. Because a cuttings propagation is always enough. In addition, the process is very easy. See for yourself.

Cuttings can be rooted in soil or in water

Propagating indoor plants with cuttings - instructions

The right time

Basically, the propagation of cuttings is possible all year round. However, early spring is particularly recommended. At this time of year, your houseplant buds and invests all its energy in the formation of strong shoots. This creates the best conditions for rapid germination and healthy growth of the daughter plant.

cut cuttings

  • Choose a sufficiently long and healthy shoot from the mother plant.
  • Only use sterile, sharp tools to cut off so as not to damage the mother plant.
  • Place the scissors just below a knot.
  • For successful germination, the cutting must have at least one leaf.
  • If the shoot is long enough, you can cut it into several cuttings.

rearing

Now you have the choice between two rearing methods:

  • germination in substrate
  • germination in a glass of water

germination in substrate

  • Prepare seed pots (€16.68) with nutrient-poor substrate.
  • Poke the ground with a wooden stick.
  • Place the cutting in the hole.
  • Lightly press the soil all around.
  • Water the substrate slightly.

germination in a glass of water

  • Fill a vase with fresh water.
  • Put the cutting in.
  • Watch for small roots forming.
  • If these are strong enough, pot the houseplant in the right substrate

Note: Rooting in a glass of water happens faster than in the ground.

care tips

Enrich the substrate

Conventional potting soil is usually too hot for the new, tender roots. Better mix peat and sand to alternative soil. If necessary, sprinkle the cuttings with a growth hormone before planting.

Ensure humidity

In the first few weeks, the cuttings cannot absorb any water from the soil. Therefore, put a plastic film over the pot to increase the humidity.

The right watering behavior

Beware of waterlogging. Water your cuttings moderately. Mold on the substrate surface is a clear warning sign of too much water.
