Indoor plants with climbing shoots create a very special look in closed rooms. However, their willingness to grow requires a climbing aid. Find out here how you can easily build a usable model yourself. The implementation is easier than expected.

A simple trellis can be easily built from branches

Build your own climbing aid

Even with little manual experience, building a trellis for indoor plants is child's play. Simply choose one of the following variants and follow our step-by-step instructions.

Simple staff

  • put a stick (metal or bamboo) in the bucket
  • wrap the plant around it
  • fasten with a string
  • Only tie shoots loosely, never pinch them off

moss sticks

Moss sticks are an alternative to simple, smooth vine sticks. Above all, they offer plants with adhesive roots the opportunity to anchor themselves deep in the moss.

  • stick a thick stick into the ground
  • Moisten and wring out moss to make it more durable
  • Wrap moss around the stick
  • fasten with wire
  • Tie aerial roots of the plant to the stick

tips

It is best to choose green wire, which is hardly noticeable in the moss.

obelisks or pyramids

  • Depending on the desired shape, insert three or four wooden sticks into the flower pot near the edge
  • pay attention to equal distances
  • bring the sticks together over the center of the flower pot
  • secure with wire or string
  • Install horizontal elements as you wish

Simple trellis

  • Lay thin wooden sticks vertically next to each other at equal intervals
  • lay a layer of wooden battens horizontally on top
  • screw at the intersections
  • put in the flower pot

tips

By braiding willow rods into a grid, you save on screws. Soak the branches beforehand to make them more pliable.

wire arches

  • the wire should be at least 2 mm thick, but bend easily
  • use a bucket as a negative mold
  • wrap the wire around the bucket
  • bend the ends down slightly so you can stick them into the ground

tips

You can build a climbing aid with the simplest means. For many plants, a string hanging from the ceiling or a simple net that you attach to the wall is sufficient.

Which indoor plants need a climbing aid?

Depending on whether you offer these indoor plants a climbing aid, they form long, climbing shoots:

  • ivy
  • ivy
  • window leaf
  • passion flower
  • climbing lily
  • Philodendron
  • jasmine
  • wreath sling
  • Dipladenia
  • climbing ficus
  • purple mare
  • chestnut wine
  • room wine
  • cape wine

With a regular pruning, the rampant growth can also be prevented if desired.
