With its light pink colored flowers and dark red leaves, the red feather bristle grass is an extremely attractive ornamental grass. Unlike the Pennisetum species originally from Asia, this variant is only conditionally hardy.
Pennisetum grass should be well protected in winter
Winter protection required
Even in mild locations you should provide the grass with good winter protection. Are suitable:
- spruce branches,
- bark mulch,
- Leaves,
- Straw.
Spread these materials in a layer that is not too thin in the root area. It is also advisable to wrap the lower third of the red lamp-cleaner grass in a special plant fleece.
Overwinter potted plants
Place potted plants indoors in autumn and keep them in a cool but frost-free room. Don't let the root ball dry out completely and water occasionally.

If you cannot provide adequate winter protection or have no way of overwintering the plant indoors, you can cultivate it as an annual. Pennisetum grows relatively quickly and forms fluffy spikes in the first year.
