Would you like to create visual highlights in your garden in late autumn and winter? All varieties of lamp cleaner grass are particularly suitable for this, as the leaves turn golden in autumn and the plant forms extremely attractive false spikes. In order for these to appear in large numbers, however, Pennisetum needs the right location.
Pennisetum likes full sunWhat place does the lamp cleaner grass like?
The ornamental grass needs a lot of light and a sheltered location to grow vigorously and healthily. The heat-loving plant feels comfortable in the blazing sun. It is true that feather bristle grass is almost completely hardy in our latitudes. Nevertheless, it is advisable to put the lamp cleaning grass in front of a protective wall, which stores the heat and gives it off to the environment at night.
In terms of soil, however, Pennisetum is undemanding. Nutrient-rich, permeable garden soil is optimal. Since the ornamental grass is very sensitive to waterlogging, you should loosen heavy, compacted soil with sand or gravel before planting. An additional drainage layer is also advisable.
tips
Make sure that the substrate is always moist. Young plants do not tolerate dry soil well and may need to be watered daily. Slightly older specimens, whose roots extend further into the ground, cope better with temporary drought.
