- Sycamore: fast growing and malleable
- Plane trees with a natural crown shape
- Shape roof plane
- Annual maintenance cuts
Hardly any other tree is as easy to cut as the plane tree. This tempts many owners to sometimes "extremely" trim their crown. Whether the good recovery ability of the sycamore justifies this remains to be discussed. These are the possible procedures for crown cutting.

Sycamore: fast growing and malleable
The growth of the plane tree can be up to 70 cm per year. In this way, it quickly retrieves the plant material lost through cutting. This is understood as a clear recommendation for regular and powerful cuts. Their crown is particularly popular in the form of a roof. But in a sufficiently large space, the plane tree can develop freely without frequent use of the scissors.
The course for the later crown is set in the first few years by appropriate cuts. Plane trees are sold preformed in tree nurseries, so that the necessary maintenance cuts are easier for the layman to do.
Plane trees with a natural crown shape
Even with a plane tree, whose crown may be shaped by nature, it must be cared for by regular pruning. Prune when necessary and only during the dormant period from October to February. The day should be dry and frost-free so that the wounds can heal faster. Using a sanitized, sharp tool, do the following:
- Leave the main shoots, only shorten them if necessary
- Remove branches that do not match the direction of growth
- Thin out disturbing, dense branches
- Completely remove dead or diseased shoots
tips
By cutting off the lower branches in summer, height growth can be encouraged. However, the main shoot must remain untouched.
Shape roof plane
A plane tree growing in the garden can replace the parasol. Because its crown can be cleverly cut to form a roof shape. If the specimen you are planting is not already trained, do the following:
- select a plane tree that has just grown
- cut the top part
- remove all vertical branches
- build a horizontal trellis of bamboo sticks
- fasten in the crown
- braid horizontal branches into it
Annual maintenance cuts
Before June 24th and the end of August, get the roof plane in shape:
- Do not touch the main shoots
- remove new vertical shoots up to the main branch
- Tie or trim lateral branches flat (if there are too many)
