We know the plane tree mainly from the southern countries of Europe. In this country it is planted less often. Probably because we are not very familiar with their cultivation. Planting is relatively easy. We should only proceed carefully when looking for a location.

The location must offer plenty of space
A young plane tree will do well in any spot, as long as it is sunny or partially shaded. However, as the tree ages, it will form a spreading crown. The invisible root system will develop even wider.
When planting, make sure that there is enough free space for future growth. Otherwise you will often have to trim the crown. You should also avoid being near walls so that the roots can spread unhindered.
tips
If you only notice afterwards that the chosen place is not ideal, luckily an older plane tree can also be transplanted easily.
The ideal time for planting is in spring
Even if container goods can be planted all year round, a warm spring month is generally recommended for planting the plane tree. The young tree has plenty of time until winter to take root and develop resilience.
Buy or grow
If you want to plant a plane tree in the garden, you will find several species to choose from in tree nurseries. Except for mini trees, the specimens offered are not exactly cheap. It is worthwhile, if there is an opportunity, to propagate a plane tree yourself.
Instructions for planting
- Dig a large planting hole about three times as deep and wide as the rootstock.
- Loosen the soil and add compost.
- Prepare a drainage layer of pebbles to increase permeability.
- Mix the excavation with compost. You can also add pebbles to loosen it up.
- Plant the sapling as deep as it was in the container.
- Fill in any gaps with the soil mix, pressing down firmly.
- Water the sycamore well.
After planting
In order for the plane tree to develop well, you should do the following immediately after planting:
- Tie the tree to a support pole
- mulch the root disc thickly
- water regularly for the first few months
