There is hardly a climbing plant that can green entire walls as decoratively as the trumpet flower. However, in order for it to be able to do this year after year, it must also survive harsh winters unscathed. Can you do this at any location and always without our help?
The American trumpet flower is very hardy
Hardiness of different species
The American trumpet flower and the hybrid Greater trumpet vine are hardy down to -20 °C. They can therefore also grow permanently outdoors with us. A wind-protected place is still an advantage.
The Chinese trumpet flower, on the other hand, is so sensitive to frost that it cannot survive our winters outside. For this reason, it makes sense to cultivate it in a mobile bucket. Because with it she can and must flee into the house in time from the frost.

Even the hardy species only develop their full resistance to frost over time. In the first three years of life, young plants must therefore still be protected by us.

The propagation of the trumpet flower is also very successful at home. It is better to keep these delicate little plants indoors during the first winter and only plant them out in their permanent location in the spring.
Frost-threatened potted plants
All hardy trumpet flowers that grow in tubs are more exposed to frost than specimens that are planted out. Your pot is surrounded by icy cold on all sides, so that the earth can freeze through faster. Therefore, these trumpet flowers may only be exposed to light frost. You can achieve this by overwintering the plant in a garage, for example.
If the bucket has to be outside, take suitable protective measures:
- Set up the pot so that it is protected from wind and rain
- Lay Styrofoam underneath
- Cover the pot with fleece or bast mats
- Cover the root area with leaves or fir branches
