- A customized pot
- Tight time window for planting
- Simple garden soil without organic additives
- Planting steps in sequence
- Further care in the pot
We all know the enchanting sight of numerous lotus flowers in the pond. But this can only rarely be achieved at home. However, a single specimen can definitely live in a pot, as long as it is given plenty of the feel-good factor of water.

A customized pot
Angular plant pots are not suitable for a lotus flower, because corners represent an insurmountable obstacle for them. If they bump into them, they cannot grow any further and soon die. It is therefore essential to use a round pot in which the lotus flower can grow along the edge. It should be about 50 cm in diameter and at least 60 cm deep. The following vessels are available, among others:
- a commercially available mortar bucket (possibly embellished on the outside)
- a discarded wine barrel
- an old tin tub
tips
The lotus flower is a heat-loving plant. Therefore, if possible, choose a dark pot, as it heats up faster in the sun and can store this heat longer.
Tight time window for planting
The lotus flower is undemanding in terms of care, but its rhizome is extremely sensitive. For this reason, all work in the root area, including planting, is carried out outside of the growing season. The annual dormancy of this aquatic plant is short, from March to early May. You should wait or not miss this time.
If you prefer to grow from seeds, you can do this indoors all year round. Proceed according to the information provided by the supplier so that germination is successful.
Simple garden soil without organic additives
The lotus flower is happy to be content with garden soil. This may contain clay, since it offers more stability. If required, powdered clay or bentonite can be added. Under no circumstances should you enrich them with compost, bark mulch or peat, as organic material in combination with water promotes rot. If you buy soil, make sure that it does not contain such components.
Planting steps in sequence
Follow the steps below, because the lotus flower needs initial fertilization on the one hand, and on the other hand the rhizome must not have direct contact with the fertilizer. Don't worry, the fast-growing roots will get to the nutrients and absorb them.
- Fill the pot 30% full with soil
- mix in a special mineral fertilizer
- Observe the manufacturer's dosage information
- put the same amount of soil on top, this time without fertilizer
- Add water until the soil becomes "mushy".
- make a well and carefully place the rhizome in it
- Do not cover the shoots of the rhizome with soil
- Fill in lukewarm water to a height of 10 to 15 cm
Further care in the pot
You have to hibernate the freshly planted lotus flower indoors until mid-May before it can enjoy fresh air and sun outside until the first frosts. In a pot, however, it can also be cultivated as a houseplant all year round.
The water above her must always be at least 15 cm high. Fertilize with a special fertilizer twice a year. There is no pruning, only withered leaves are removed.
