With its numerous, pleasantly scented inflorescences, the tuberose can be the star of the summer. In spring, however, the entire splendor of the plant is still hidden as potential in a tuber. This must be brought to the start well.

The tuberose inspires in summer with numerous beautiful flowers

Wait for the frost or drive them indoors

When nature awakens to new life early in the year, tuberose is not one of the party. The tuber must not be in the garden soil, because late frosts could still occur. Planting from the end of March can only be considered if the weather forecast announces warm weeks.

So that the tuberose, botanically Agave polianthes, does not start from scratch outside, the clever owner drives it forward in the house. So he can admire the blossom a little earlier.

  • start in February
  • Put onions in flower pots
  • use nutrient-rich potting soil
  • Cover the tubers by a maximum of 2 cm
  • bright but not too warm
  • Keep soil slightly moist
  • Water more after leaves sprout

Find the ideal outdoor space

Location, location, location! This is an important ingredient for thriving tuberose landscapes. So before you take the tubers out of the hibernation or from the window sill, you should have found a suitable place for them. It needs to be sunny and windless, with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil.

Work some mature compost into the soil. If the soil is loamy, loosen it up with sand or bark mulch. An acidic pH value is adjusted to the needs of the plant with about 100 grams of lime per square meter.

tips

Never choose a location for the tuberose close to the house or in places where you prefer to stay or spend a lot of time in summer. Because the intensely fragrant flowers develop into a bee magnet.

Set onions correctly

Tubers that have not emerged should ideally be planted in the garden by the end of April. For later dates, flowering is not guaranteed. Pushed specimens, on the other hand, can be planted out from May to June.

If planting is possible early in terms of weather, then it makes sense to plant a "portion" every two weeks. So not all specimens bloom at once. When planting the bulbs, keep the following points in mind:

  • Planting depth is 5 to 7 centimeters
  • Distance between two bulbs: 15 to 30 cm
