- Fertilize only when there is a lack of nutrients
- Use the scissors regularly
- Hibernation in the pond
- Additional care in the aquarium
The waterweed requires little maintenance, which is why it is also suitable for inexperienced aquarists and new pond owners. But if left to its own devices, it can spread widely. Since it rarely takes root alone in the water, it must also be properly cared for for the sake of other plants.

Fertilize only when there is a lack of nutrients
For its strong growth, the waterweed needs plenty of nutrients, which it gets from the water. It thus competes with algae for nutrients and successfully prevents algal blooms from occurring.
The waterweed is only fertilized when a nutrient deficiency becomes noticeable with pale colored leaves. Fertilize them in the pond with a liquid aquatic plant fertilizer until the deficiency symptoms have disappeared. Daily fertilizer is recommended in the aquarium, as the small dosage prevents over-fertilization.
Use the scissors regularly
Regardless of whether it is planted outside in a pond or in an aquarium, it is extremely rare for waterweed to not grow properly. On the contrary, it grows so luxuriantly that the uncontrolled spread of waterweed has to be fought.
- Thin out stems regularly
- shorten it if necessary
- possible in the aquarium at any time
- outside from June
- Waterweed can multiply from any section
- therefore remove clippings from the water
tips
If you plant waterweed with the plant basket in the pond, you can control its spread more easily or get it out of the water for cutting.
Hibernation in the pond
In autumn, the shoots of the waterweed usually turn brown and sink to the depths. Fish out most of the plant parts, otherwise they will rot and affect the water quality. A part may remain in the water to sprout again in the spring.
tips
The Argentine waterweed is only partially hardy and needs light even in winter. If the winter is harsh or if the pond is covered with snow for a long time, the plant can die completely. If possible, overwinter a piece of her in the aquarium and replant it in the spring.
Additional care in the aquarium
All waterweed plants that live permanently in the aquarium need sufficient light and CO2 as well as an even temperature. Ensure that the ideal values are given.
- 10-20 mg CO2 per liter
- bright location, alternatively plant lighting
- no direct sunlight
- Use floor heating incl. water flow
