Water lilies can not only proliferate on the water surface. The rhizomes also continue to spread under water. If the growth of the plant has gotten out of hand, not only the plant parts above ground, but also they must be removed from the bottom of the pond.

Why water lily roots have to go
If you want to reduce the size of your water lilies, it is sometimes not enough to just remove the leaves that are visible above the water. In cases of strong spread, you also have to get to the roots, because the water lily keeps sprouting out of them.
Root Removal Challenges
A single water lily, which is embedded in the pond together with the plant basket (€11.99), makes it easy for us to remove the roots. But sometimes these can still connect firmly to the substrate. Water lilies that have even been planted present us with several challenges:
- difficult to reach at depth
- clouded vision
- very strong roots
Get into the pond
In a shallow pond, rhizome by rhizome can be removed by hand. For this you have to get into the water. If you cannot rip out the rhizomes by hand, you can also use a saw or a spade. Be careful not to damage other aquatic plants.
tips
If the pond is lined with foil, it must not be damaged during this action, as it can then no longer fulfill its function.
Stubborn and deep-rooted specimens
Removing the water lilies can be a sweaty affair when they have already developed very strong roots. Occasionally it may be necessary to drain the pond. This allows you to see more clearly, reach the roots better and carry out every work step more effectively.
Very large roots that you cannot detach from the bottom with your own strength must be removed from the pond using a machine. Tie a sturdy rope to it and pull out the root with the car or other motorized vehicle.
