Large palms are expensive in the trade, but a small specimen or seed is affordable for everyone. But if you choose this type of palm tree with the decorative fan fronds, you ultimately want a meter-high palm tree. With what steps does she strive upwards?

Fast growing palm species
Compared to other cultivated palms, the Washingtonia robusta is considered to be fast-growing. Although these are positive prospects, no exact, generally valid and binding statement can be made for annual growth.
In this country, the palm tree can never grow under the ideal conditions of its homeland of Mexico. Regions with different climates and annual weather fluctuations have a decisive say. Not to forget: the harsh winter!
Cultivation experience
Observant owners have observed that the fan palm is capable of the following:
- in the first year, 2-3 fronds sprout
- Plant size up to 70 cm after just one year
- after that, the number of new shoots increases every year
- after all, up to 20 new palm fronds per year are possible
Notice:
Reaching heights of up to 30 m outdoors, the Washington palm only grows to about 3-4 m in our country. This is primarily due to their existence in the bucket.
A growth-promoting location
Like any palm, the Washingtonia robusta needs a sunny location to grow quickly. Only admit the conditionally hardy palm tree when frost is imminent. During a bright hibernation with a temperature of between 5 and 10 degrees, growth slows down but never stops completely.
Deep pot is important
Rapid growth cannot occur without a healthy root system. The Washingtonia would like to stretch its roots deep, the width of the pot is of secondary importance. If you repot a young palm tree in new substrate every spring, you should also make sure that the new pot is at least a third larger than the old one.
More care for more growth
Plenty of water during the growing season is a prerequisite for high annual growth. Nutrients must also be available from April to September, with a commercially available NPK green manure being sufficient. But if you deviate from the manufacturer's recommendations to accelerate growth with a lot of fertilizer, you will harvest yellow leaves.
