Lots of yellow leaves on a Washington palm are not normal! The cause should be found and eliminated soon. Otherwise, one sheet at a time will change color. But where to start the search? We suggest that they put maintenance to the test first.

Does it get enough light all year round?
The fan palm needs a lot of light all year round. During the summer, especially when placed in a sunny spot, there is enough light. But in winter, the Washington palm, which is not sufficiently hardy, has to hibernate in a frost-free winter quarters.
- put the palm tree close to the window
- if necessary, install a plant lamp (€21.99).
- gradually get used to the sun in the spring
tips
Wait until the yellow leaves are completely dry before trimming. Set the scissors about 5 cm away from the trunk.
Is the water balance correct?
Washingtonia robusta soil should remain constantly moist. The top layer of soil is only allowed to dry out in winter. However, the preference for water does not go so far that the palm likes to stand in water. Waterlogging can cause yellow leaves, as can a dry root ball. Adapt your watering behavior to the needs of the plant. It is better to water with smaller amounts, but more often. Too hard water also leads to chlorosis.
Were nutrients optimally dosed?
The annual increase in the Washingtona palm can be up to 20 palm fronds. But if you want to turn your small palm into a stately, 3-4 m high specimen, you should have patience and give too generous nutrients. This is just as harmful as nutrient deficiencies. Fertilize mainly from April to September with a green manure, whereby the manufacturer's dosage recommendation must be observed. Then the leaves remain juicy green.
tips
Repot a young Washingtonia to fresh, well-drained soil annually in spring or summer. Older specimens are repotted every 2-3 years. A palm tree with yellow leaves can also benefit from repotting.
Is there a pest infestation?
Sucking spider mites also cause a color change. The greatest danger is in winter, when the palm is too warm and overwintered in dry heating air. If no other winter quarters with 5-10 °C are available, you should at least spray the palm with water regularly. Cut off infested fronds and fight the pests with a suitable agent.
