Despite various problems, the evergreen boxwood (Buxus sempervirens and other species) is one of the most popular trees and shrubs in the garden. This popularity is not surprising, as the plant is considered to be easy to care for, versatile and extremely easy to cut. However, to ensure that you can enjoy your Buchs for a long time, you should provide it with sufficient and regular water - it needs more water than is commonly assumed.

Water the boxwood in the garden properly
In principle, a box planted in the garden does not have to be watered regularly, but it does on special occasions. Freshly planted specimens have a particularly high water requirement, which should be immersed with the root ball in a bucket of water immediately before planting and also have a significantly higher requirement in the first two weeks after planting. Water the plant evenly, i. H. don't just pour the water out in one place, but all around. This allows the rootstock and thus also the parts of the plant above ground to develop evenly. Furthermore, Buchs should be watered during hot and/or dry phases so that it does not suffer from thirst. Please note the following:
- Only water from below, never over the leaves.
- Do not water with cold tap water!
- Calcareous tap water is fine, but should be warmed up.
- Water early in the morning if possible, but never at midday.
Tips for the optimal watering of a container plant
Although boxwood needs a comparatively large amount of moisture, it does not tolerate overly wet feet and certainly not waterlogging. So keep the substrate slightly moist but not wet and ensure good drainage in the pot so that excess water can drain out and be poured off. Buchs should also be watered moderately during the winter months, as this is when new roots form.
tips
Since Buchs also has a high nutrient requirement, you should also fertilize it regularly.
