Most of the approximately 70 species of banana plants come from tropical or subtropical areas and accordingly prefer warm temperatures. They are mostly traded as houseplants. In addition to the real bananas (bot. Musa), there are various ornamental bananas.

The temperatures a banana likes depends entirely on the variety

The right temperature in summer

Basically, the temperature should be around 20 °C. 15°C is the minimum during the summer months. Of course, the right temperature also depends on the variety of your banana tree. Tropical plants like it a little warmer all year round, while others are content with a slightly cooler environment. If your banana plant feels good, then it is less susceptible to diseases or pests.

Can my banana plant go outside?

Your banana plant is welcome to spend the summer outside in the garden or on the balcony, provided it is warm enough there. A cold, wet summer that is typical of northern Germany is not particularly well tolerated by many banana varieties. Slowly acclimate your banana plant to the fresh air and sunlight after the ice saints in May.

To begin with, it is sufficient to place the plant in a partially shaded and wind-protected place for a few hours. Later she can stay outside overnight. In autumn, remember to bring your banana plant back into the apartment/house in good time before the first night frosts come. Otherwise she will quickly drop her leaves.

The ideal temperature in winter

You can certainly overwinter a tropical banana tree in your living room, it is used to constant warmth. Other species prefer cooler winter quarters, where they can recover from their relatively rapid growth. As a rule, it should be frost-free in the winter quarters, only hardy varieties tolerate temperatures down to -10 °C.

The essentials in brief:

  • ideal temperature: approx. 20 °C
  • Minimum temperature: 15°C
  • bright location, but no blazing summer/midday sun
  • protect from drafts and strong winds
  • ideal humidity: at least 50%

tips

A summer on the balcony or in the garden makes your banana plant more resilient and contributes to its well-being.
