Proper care of the Chinese hibiscus includes repotting in fresh soil once a year. If you choose the right time, prepare the repotting well and proceed carefully when repotting, you will be rewarded with a healthy plant.

When will it be repotted?

The indoor hibiscus is repotted in spring. Then the dormant period is over and the plant begins to sprout. If you repot later, there is a risk that the hibiscus will drop the flowers.

Well prepared

All the materials you need to repot the hibiscus should be prepared beforehand so that you can work quickly. This includes a commercially available potting soil, a fork to loosen the soil, a
well-sharpened secateurs or a sharp knife and possibly a new container.

The Chinese hibiscus does not need huge pots to thrive. It gets along well with a small pot size and little substrate. Put young plants in a larger container every year. It is best to use a pot that is no more than 2 cm larger than the old one.

Older hibiscus plants stay in their pot. Here only the soil is exchanged and the roots receive a strong pruning.

Repotting - a good opportunity for pruning

At the same time as repotting, the Chinese hibiscus can be pruned back as a further care measure. A slight annual pruning promotes compact growth of the plant, strong shoots and large flowers.

Repotted step-by-step

  • gently tilt the hibiscus
  • loosen the substrate by gently pressing or tapping on the pot and remove the plant
  • tap loose soil
  • Loosen up the roots - a fork is suitable for this - and cut back overly long roots so that the roots can spread well in the new soil
  • with large plants, the roots are cut back far enough for sufficient soil to fit between the ball and the wall of the container
  • fill the new container with fresh soil
  • place the hibiscus in such a way that the roots can spread to all sides and cover with soil

tips and tricks

Before the hibiscus in the tub gets its summer place on the terrace and blooms, it is also repotted. Since the potted plants get relatively large over the years, it is best to find someone to help you with the repotting.
