Tomatoes come in an overwhelming variety of varieties. Unfortunately, the sparse range of shops leaves a lot to be desired. Just grow your favorite varieties in the garden. Here you can find out how to successfully manage the 'Tomatoes outdoors' project.

The choice of location sets the course for success
Tomatoes are one of the few crops that do not have to change location every year. As long as they thrive in good health, they can stay at their regular place for years. The only thing to avoid at all costs is the proximity to potatoes or other nightshade plants. We will tell you here what other properties an optimal location should have:
- Sunny location, warm and protected from rain if possible
- nutrient-rich soil, humic, fresh and permeable
- a good pH value is around 6
Cultivation and hardening create small powerhouses
Outdoors, only the strongest tomato plants can cope with the local weather conditions. Therefore, when growing indoors, it is important to strengthen their resilience. Before sowing, soak the seeds in chamomile tea, garlic juice or valerian flower extract. Only prick out robust seedlings. In addition, we recommend a period of hardening before the young tomatoes finally move outdoors.
- take the young plants outside when the outside temperature is constant at 12-15 degrees Celsius
- set up in a semi-shady, sheltered place by the hour during the day
- after 8-10 days the tomatoes tolerate full sun
Planting and caring for tomatoes in the open ground - the key points
When the planting season begins in mid-May, place the tomato plants 60 centimeters apart in the bed. Spoil the heavy feeders with a handful of compost directly in the planting hole. Then put the tomato in the ground at a slight angle up to the base of the leaf. Then hammer the support rod into the ground and tie on the first shoots.
Water tomato plants regularly, close to the root area. Until flowering, the nutrient supply is limited to compost. From June/July increase the dosage to a 14-day rhythm with nettle manure or mineral multi-nutrient fertilizer. Most tomato varieties thrive more luxuriantly and with higher yields if they are pinched weekly. Those who heed this linchpin of care will be rewarded with magnificent tomatoes in abundance.
tips and tricks
Anyone who finds the construction of a rain cover for tomato plants too time-consuming should preferably plant grafted varieties outdoors. 'Philona F1' is one of them, as is 'Cupido' or the new breed 'Conqueror F 1'.
