Raspberries are easy to plant in the garden. No prior knowledge is required for this. Just ensure a favorable location and prepare the soil optimally.

Summer raspberries or autumn raspberries - or both?
If you want to harvest fresh raspberries for many weeks, you should plant both varieties. However, create a separate row for each type.
Summer raspberries bear more plentifully, need more care and are often infested with maggots. Growing autumn raspberries is less time-consuming and there is no maggot problem. The harvest is usually not quite so plentiful.
If you have limited space in the garden, you can also choose so-called two-timer raspberries, which bear fruit twice a year.
The right place to put raspberries
Raspberries thrive best in a sunny, airy location. There the fruits grow bigger and sweeter. An airy place also prevents diseases and pest infestation.
A bed on which other berry bushes have previously stood is not suitable. Also keep your distance from other beds or plants.
Proper soil preparation is key
- Deeply loosen the soil
- Remove thickening
- remove weeds
- Work in compost or manure
The soil must be loosened as deeply as possible. Remove all thickenings such as old roots and stones. This prevents waterlogging from occurring, which the raspberries don't get at all.
Keep the planting site weed-free. Work in compost, rotted manure or peat.
Observe planting distance
Raspberries should not be too close together. This encourages the spread of fungus.
Plant raspberries in a row at least 50 centimeters apart. You should leave a space of 1.50 meters between several rows.
Planting the plants
Only plant the plants about five centimeters deep in the ground. Don't press the soil too hard.
Install a scaffold to which you can tie the raspberry plant rods.
tips and tricks
Raspberry perennials from specialist dealers are usually delivered as container plants. Before planting these plants in the ground, you should place them in a bucket filled with water for a few hours beforehand. The roots then soak well and grow faster.
