Propagating raspberries is not particularly difficult. Even as a gardening beginner, you can easily grow new plants for your garden. In order for the propagation to succeed, you should follow a few tips.

Various methods of propagation
Summer and autumn red and black raspberries are propagated in the same way by:
- root cuttings
- foothills
- lowering
Propagating raspberries by cuttings
You can obtain cuttings directly from the root of the desired raspberry plant. This gives you the guarantee that you are growing exactly the type of raspberry you want to propagate.
Autumn is the best time to take cuttings. Cut off a piece of the root with the spade. Make sure that enough eyes and fine roots remain on the section.
Divide the root piece into individual cuttings. Each cutting should be about four inches long and have at least five eyes.
Plant root cuttings in autumn
Plant the cuttings a few inches deep in the loose soil and cover them with soil.
Spread a mulch of leaves, straw or bark over it to protect the young plants from frost.
Plant the seedlings in the desired location in spring.
Gain new plants by lowering
By lowering, the gardener understands that one or more rods of the raspberry bush are laid on the ground, fixed there and covered with earth in places.
In the covered areas, the rods form roots and later leaves. They are cut out in the spring and transplanted to the desired location.
Subterranean propagation works better if you tie the canes with copper wire where they are buried. They dam up the plant sap and stimulate root formation.
Special case black raspberries
Black raspberries are not propagated by root cuttings or offshoots. In order to grow new plants, you need to lower the tips of the shoots in the fall.
The rods are bent downwards and the tips are placed on humus-rich garden soil. Then cover them with soil. From this, independent plants form over the winter.
They are separated from the rod in the spring and planted in the desired location.
Use raspberry runners
If your raspberries have formed many runners, you can easily grow new raspberry bushes from them.
They dig up the runners and make sure that they are sufficiently rooted. Then put them in a prepared bed in a sunny spot.
However, you should only use this method if you only have one raspberry variety in the garden. Otherwise, you may catch offshoots of strains you didn't intend to propagate.
tips and tricks
If you propagate autumn raspberries by cuttings or runners, you can harvest some fruit next year. With summer raspberries, it takes a year longer for new raspberries to grow on the young plants.
