Sea buckthorn is not necessarily one of those shrubs that are sold by tree nurseries, hardware stores, etc. at a bargain price. It is considered to be extremely easy to care for, location-tolerant and grateful. Aren't these enough reasons to think about propagating this plant?

The simplest method: propagate sea buckthorn via foothills
Sea buckthorn is usually propagated by cutting off its runners. Its roots form a multitude of offshoots. With them, he is able to spread on his own - not always to the delight of his owners. Nevertheless: All in all, this is the most proven and simplest method for propagating sea buckthorn.
Also easy: Propagation via sinkers
Furthermore, the young shoots of sea buckthorn can be used to multiply it. For this purpose, the young shoots on the ground are covered with earth and kept moist. The following year they produced new shoots.
The propagation of cuttings
Whether half-lignified cuttings in summer or sticks in autumn/winter - sea buckthorn can be propagated with its shoots. However, this procedure is not easy and does not work 100%. For this reason, it is advisable to set several shoots to multiply.
When propagating cuttings, branches about 20 cm long are cut off from the sea buckthorn. Before placing them in a water glass or in soil, their lowest leaves should be removed. They root best in a shady, cool and wind-protected place. If you choose this method, choose healthy and strong branches.
For the patient: sowing
Gardeners who are patient and willing to experiment can propagate sea buckthorn from its seeds. The disadvantage of this method: You do not know in advance whether a male or female specimen will result from the respective seed. Most sea buckthorn seeds develop into female plants.
Sowing is done as follows:
- 1. Harvest and dry the berries in September.
- 2. Stratify (expose to a cold stimulus) the seeds for 3 months.
- 3. Sow the seeds in spring - preferably in a tub.
- 4. After a few days, their cotyledons will appear.
tips and tricks
Sea buckthorn usually reproduces by itself after a few years through its runners. Therefore, no additional time has to be sacrificed to dedicate to its propagation via seed, sinkers or cuttings.
