Up to now they were found almost exclusively in botanical gardens, but now they are also conquering private gardens - the red mulberry. It is well on the way to overtaking the black mulberry in Germany.

The red mulberry is actually native to North America, which is why it is also called American mulberry. It is considered one of the mulberry trees. Their fruits are dark red, sometimes almost black. Then the fruits can hardly be distinguished from the black mulberry. A connoisseur, on the other hand, cannot confuse the trees with one another.

The look of the red mulberry

Mostly the red mulberry is about 10 to 15 meters high, where it likes it particularly well sometimes up to 20 meters. It has a grey-brown bark that breaks open in long vertical stripes with age. The coarsely toothed leaves are very variable in shape, from ovate to heart-shaped, multilobed and unlobed. In autumn they turn golden yellow.

Depending on the variety, the red mulberry blooms from April to June. The flowers resemble the willow catkins. Female inflorescences are only about 8 to 12 mm long, while male inflorescences are much larger at about 3 to 5 cm long.

The benefits of the red mulberry

The red mulberry is one of the so-called clever plants or indicator plants that indicate spring because they only sprout when the last frost is over. This makes them very popular with vegetable gardeners. So you know exactly when frost-sensitive varieties can be planted or sown outdoors.

Because of its interesting growth, the red mulberry is ideal as an ornamental tree for large gardens, but also just as well as a fruit tree. Because their fruits are very tasty. They are ready to harvest in summer, very sweet and juicy. Unfortunately, they don't last very long. They spoil within a few days, so they should be processed quickly.
