Hedges are usually set as a natural demarcation of properties. Within the garden, they serve as a space-defining design element that structures the area and creates intimate spaces. If you take good care of the hedge from the start, the shrubs will thrive better and grow wonderfully dense.

The plant cut
This takes place immediately after setting a new enclosure. It is indispensable if you have planted bare-root bushes, because it creates the balance between the roots and the above-ground part of the plant. This cut guarantees that the newly created hedge grows bushy and dense from below. Plant pruning is strongly recommended for shrubs that are difficult to grow, such as hornbeam or hawthorn.
A mechanical hedge trimmer is sufficient for cutting the young hedge. So the wounds close quickly. Blunt tools, on the other hand, crush the branches and leave frayed cuts through which pathogens can enter.
Method:
- Shorten the main shoots by about a third.
- Encourage strong shoots as the leading drive.
- Cut out unwanted small or poorly growing branches.
- Also remove steep shoots and competing shoots.
More cuts
The more often you prune the shrubs, the more the bushes will branch. If you shorten a young hedge twice a year from the start, it will grow a little more slowly, but all the more densely.
Get cut. Tapering upwards over a broad base, the light reaches all areas. As a result, the branches near the ground do not bare. Always stretch a batter board so that you can work precisely.
tips
Especially with a young hedge, it is important to find the right cutting size. If you are too hesitant, the maintenance measure will have no effect. If you shorten it too radically, unsightly bald spots can result. In addition, the hedge hardly increases in height.
