For a variety of reasons, it can make sense to transplant a gooseberry bush. The timing plays an important role in this. We show when and how the plan succeeds.

The best date

Gooseberries can still be transplanted after a few years. It is important to note that this measure should be carried out during the sap dormancy in January or February. The ground should be mostly thawed. On the day itself, deep sub-zero temperatures are also a disadvantage.

Step-by-step instructions for transplanting

When you transplant a gooseberry bush, a more or less large root volume is inevitably lost. To compensate for this shortcoming in advance, cut back the fruit trees by a third. At the same time, you water the plant thoroughly, which further limits the loss. Then proceed as follows:

  • Loosely tie the prickly shoots together with a ribbon
  • Remove the soil around the bush with a spade until the roots are visible
  • dig up the root ball extensively
  • Cut off deeper lying strands and loosen the bale

Now lift out the gooseberry bush and place it in a wheelbarrow. You can transport the wood to its new location without a long delay.

Prudent care after moving

Even though the gooseberry bush is transplanted during the sap dormancy, the procedure still involves considerable stress. Careful care is therefore essential so that it can find its feet in the new place. Choose a sunny to partially shaded location that is as warm and sheltered as possible.

Before you move, enrich the soil with compost and horn shavings. Plant the shrub exactly as deep as it was previously. As a result, water the gooseberries thoroughly for the next few weeks. A mulch layer of nettles or comfrey also makes a valuable contribution to healthy growth.

tips and tricks

Not so easy to correctly classify the shoots on a gooseberry bush according to their age. Since the age of the branches is of central importance for a successful pruning, there is a simple trick. Mark the branches with rings of different colors. Then you won't have to worry about which main shoots have to give way next year.
