As popular and well-known as the coconut is, hardly anyone knows how to correctly classify it botanically. The coconut, a stone fruit, grows on a tropical tree that belongs to the palm family.

The nut that isn't

Botanically, the coconut is a single-seeded drupe and not a real nut at all. The fruit, which is around 20 to 30 cm long, often has a slightly triangular shape. When ripe, it weighs between 900 and around 2500 grams. The actual seed is surrounded by three layers that have grown together.

The outer shell is very hard. Three so-called germ holes can be seen on one side, but only one of them contains an active germ. This germination hole is slightly softer than the two inactive ones. There the nut is also drilled to remove the coconut water for drinking.
