The coconut palm is a popular but demanding houseplant. It thrives well in special palm soil and in the ideal location with lots of warmth, water and light. It can grow up to two or three meters tall.

Coconut palms need a lot of water, but do not tolerate waterlogging. Therefore, they need a permeable soil. Compacted soil without drainage does not suit them at all. A mixture of earth, sand and gravel, expanded clay (€19.73) or granulated lava (€13.99) is better. Alternatively, you can use palm soil from specialist shops.
The best soil for a coconut tree:
- special palm soil
- Soil mixture with sand and gravel or expanded clay
Does the coconut palm need fertilizer?
A young coconut palm should be fertilized regularly every 14 days. For this purpose, commercial green plant fertilizer is diluted in half, because the young plant does not yet need the full dose. After about three years, the palm gets fertilizer in a normal concentration once a month.
