Mowing with a scythe is actually experiencing a new renaissance, because this extraordinary tool, which seemed long forgotten, offers garden owners a whole range of advantages. Incidentally, your neighbors too, because these amazingly efficient hand tools, in contrast to the lawn mower, do their job completely silently.

Mowing the lawn with a scythe is easy to learn

The nature-friendly mowing method also saves fossil fuels and money, and it can also be used optimally for long-growing grass in the garden and on terrain that is otherwise difficult to access. However, you have to know a little bit about mowing technology and at least have heard the terms “peening” and “whistling”.

With "a good cutting edge" mowing becomes child's play

Does the Sensenverein e. V. on its online portal and in many informative articles provides an easily understandable overview of the most important rules for handling and caring for historical mowing tools. If you register for the (free) forum access, you will also be given some insider tricks, so that every average do-it-yourselfer and allotment gardener can acquire the necessary basic technical knowledge in a short time. If that's not enough for you, we recommend taking a look at "The Sense Handbook", which was published in 2022 by the Swiss Haupt Verlag and presents numerous pictures and drawings relating to the art of scythe mowing. All work steps, from the assembly of a scythe to the optimal mowing technique that is gentle on the spinal discs, are explained on the 144 pages. There is also no lack of helpful tips and tricks for peening and sharpening, forging scythe blades or tips on storing a scythe appropriately and safely.

Off to the date with the scythe teacher

The best way to really learn how to do this is at one of the courses that are held in many federal states by experienced scythe teachers. The current dates are regularly and one month in advance on the homepage of the Sensenverein e. V. Germany, where you will also find interesting reports on the special kind of mowing events that have already taken place. In a self-test, however, the author of this article found that it does not take an excessively long period of practice to get used to using the wrought-iron mowers without injuring yourself.

If you buy (scythes) cheaply, you (usually) buy twice

This age-old aphorism often applies to gardening tools and almost always to scythes. Partner sales of the German and Austrian scythe club is the Silvanus shop, where customers have the guarantee of getting a perfectly crafted scythe with a scythe throw that fits exactly and is tailored to the body size. For a 60 to 75 cm long scythe you have to reckon with a price between 50 and 60 €, suitable scythe throws with key cost at least 70 € again. In comparison with the noisy lawn mower, it is a very inexpensive alternative, with which you can also work in the evenings or at weekends without disturbing your environment.
