Grape harvest in your own garden no longer has to remain a dream. Not much is missing for a hobby gardener to become a hobby winemaker. Find out here how easy it is to plant and care for grapevines in the home garden.

Planting vines correctly - that's what matters in the garden

Only in the sunniest and warmest spot in the garden do vines have a good chance of vigorous growth. Ideally, the bedding soil should be rich in humus and low in lime, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. There you start preparing the soil in autumn of the previous year so that the soil can settle before planting. Here's how to do it:

  • loosen the soil at least 40 centimeters deep
  • optimize with plenty of compost, rock flour, algae lime and a little sand
  • Weed again thoroughly in April or May of the following year at the location
  • soak the potted vine in water for 10-12 hours
  • dig a planting pit 35 centimeters deep
  • insert the potted plant and water well with 5 to 10 liters of water

Plant the vine with a slight inclination to the climbing aid only so deep that the grafting point is 4-5 centimeters above ground level. The selected grape variety determines the planting distance, which is between 100 and 200 centimeters. If the planting site is in front of a protective wall, a distance of at least 20 centimeters should be maintained. Finally put the plant stick.

Relevant care aspects at a glance

In the year of planting, care focuses on a good establishment at the site. This includes a regular water supply, especially in the first few weeks, without drowning the vines. The strongest shoot is chosen as the trunk and tied to the plant stake in proportion to growth. Break out all other shoots. Overall, professional care revolves around the following measures:

  • water moderately but regularly
  • fertilize organically every 2 weeks with compost, horn shavings (32.93€) or guano
  • annual pruning at the end of February/beginning of March and green cuttings in May/June
