The origin of the lime is assumed to be in India and on the Malay Peninsula. There, the evergreen tree bears flowers and fruit all year round in tropical temperatures. In Germany, the lime tree should winter cool but frost-free and as bright as possible.

Limes also need light in winter

Like all other citrus trees, the lime also has a high light requirement. Too dark a location will cause the tree to shed its leaves. You should therefore choose a place that is as bright as possible; a bright (south-facing) room is ideal. Temperatures between five and a maximum of 12 °C are perfect, i.e. frost-free and cool. Water the lime regularly, based on the principle that the cooler it is, the less water is needed. The low temperatures are important because the incidence of light in winter is too short and too low to maintain a healthy growth phase.

tips and tricks

A greenhouse or a bright conservatory is best for overwintering the lime. Alternatively, accommodation in the bedroom or in a stairwell is also possible. However, make sure that the tree does not get drafts.
