It amazes even experienced hobby gardeners that grapevines thrive in pots. Screening walls on paved surfaces can thus be wonderfully greened. You can read here what care the vine requires and how to overwinter it.

Drainage in the bucket is a must

Drainage above the water drain in the soil is essential when potting. Suitable materials are crushed potsherds, expanded clay (€19.73) or grit. (€46.95) Spread a fleece over it so that no crumbs of earth clog the inorganic material layer.

As a substrate, we recommend a structurally stable mixture of two parts potting soil and one part each of compost and perlite (€37.51) or expanded clay. A handful of peat or leaf soil ensures the desired, slightly acidic pH value of 5.5 to 7.5.

Loving care compensates for locational disadvantages

By no means every hobby gardener tends his vines in the mild wine-growing climate. The robust climbing plants also thrive in rougher locations. In this case, choose early-ripening grape varieties that are content with less sunshine and do not grow rampant. If the following care is then added, nothing stands in the way of magnificent growth and a fruity grape harvest:

  • water regularly and sparingly
  • From March to September, fertilize organically every 14 days with a liquid preparation
  • pruning in February/March
  • in summer make the green cuttings in June

Collected rainwater is ideal for watering. Ideally, you water vines in buckets with pond water, because it contains valuable nutrients.

This is how a grapevine overwinters in a bucket

Grapevines are naturally frost-resistant and survive the cold season outdoors in all regions. In tub culture, on the other hand, there is a risk that the almost unprotected root ball will freeze through in frosty temperatures. If a cool, frost-free winter quarters is available, it should be used. How to spend the winter outdoors:

  • wrap the tub in bubble wrap and place on a block of wood
  • cover the substrate thickly with straw, leaves or fir fronds
  • water a little on frost-free days

tips and tricks

If the temperature in the winter quarters rises above 12 degrees Celsius, an unwanted premature budding begins. This circumstance does not turn out to be a mishap if, in this exceptional case, you only carry the vines in the tub outside in the middle of May. In the weeks before, the tender shoots are too endangered by late frosts.
