It goes by in no time, the delicious grape season. It's good to know that the sweet fruits freeze very well. We will tell you the best tips and tricks for a long storage period.

Fast freezing promises maximum enjoyment

If fruit is frozen, it quickly becomes mushy after thawing and can only be used as a compote. Not so with grapes, because the smooth skin avoids the dilemma. There are, of course, a few guidelines to be followed. As a general rule of thumb, the faster the fruit is frozen, the crunchier and more aromatic it will remain in taste. How to do it right:

  • Use grapes with firm, intact skins and without stems
  • Rinse in a sieve under running water and pat dry
  • Spread out on a plate or baking sheet without touching each other
  • Sift with fine sugar to taste

Now slide the plate into the quick-freeze compartment of the freezer. After 4 to 5 hours, the grapes are frozen through. The fruit must not remain in it for longer than one night in order to preserve maximum aroma and texture. Now they are excellent for immediate consumption as an addition to ice cream or for use as fruity ice cubes in drinks.

Preferably freeze seedless and blue grapes

Experienced housewives have known for a long time: Green grapes with seeds are mushy after freezing. In this consistency they can still be used for the preparation of compote, jam or syrup. Blue and seedless grape varieties, on the other hand, have the best chance of being used as a decoration for a dessert or cake topping after they have been thawed. To ensure that table grapes can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months, proceed as follows:

  • fetch from the chest after quick freezing,
  • without letting the grapes thaw, immediately put them in freezer bags or cans,
  • close tightly and stamp with the date

Because the fruit is already pre-frozen, it won't stick together in the bag or tin. This means that space-saving storage is possible without any problems. Adult connoisseurs may consume the still frozen grapes. They are taboo for small children in this state because the berries could slip down their throat and get stuck there due to the smooth skin.

tips and tricks

If green grapes turn out to be very soft after thawing, boiling them down turns them into a delicious grape juice. Put 2 kilograms of grapes with 250 milliliters of apple juice in a cauldron and let them simmer until all the fruit has burst. Strain through a sieve and allow to cool - a refreshing grape juice is ready.
