Grapevines are deep-rooted. So they don't just accept the move to a new location. Here we explain what you should pay attention to when transplanting a vine. This is how the plan works.

Choosing the right time

Since every transplanting is a high stress factor for vines, a day during the winter sap dormancy can be considered as a date. In addition, the procedure involves a pruning. The months of January and February are therefore recommended. The ground must no longer be frozen and there must be frost-free weather on the day itself.

Best prerequisites through the right preparation

Two to three weeks before the actual transplanting, tackle the following preparatory work:

  • In a radius of 1 meter around the trunk, cut out the roots with the spade
  • Use a digging fork to loosen the root ball a little
  • then water the vine penetratingly

The end of the preparation is a consistent pruning, which in this case can be a little more extensive. This measure compensates for the lost root mass. In addition, the planting site at the new location is thoroughly weeded, dug two spades deep and generously enriched with compost.

Properly transplant step-by-step

On the selected date, water the vines again generously. Then the grapevine root is excavated extensively. If possible, soil should remain in the root system. Place the vine in a wheelbarrow to transport it safely to its new location. Follow these steps:

  • dig a planting pit with 1.5 times the volume of the root ball
  • enrich the excavation with algae lime or stone powder
  • create a drainage made of potsherds or grit on the sole
  • spread a first layer of potting soil over it

Then plant the vine in the middle and fill the cavity with the remaining excavation. Make sure that the grafting point is 4-5 centimeters above the ground. Finally, water the transplanted vine.

tips and tricks

The older a vine, the more risky it is to transplant it to a new location. Foresighted hobby gardeners therefore cut several sticks in good time. If the garden is not in a protected wine-growing area, a new vine can be grown from it in an emergency.
