Like all umbellifers, parsley is propagated by seed. Seeds can be obtained by plucking them from the plant after flowering, or simply by purchasing a sachet of ready-made seeds. This also applies to parsley roots, which are also grown from seed.

Propagating parsley by seed
Parsley blooms in June and July for the second year. The inflorescences are pollinated by insects and can be picked when ripe.
The ripeness of the seeds can be recognized by the fact that the seeds become very dark and almost fall out of the flower by themselves.
After harvesting the seeds, uproot and compost the mother plant. Parsley leaves should not be used in the kitchen after they have bloomed, as they contain too much apiol.
drying seeds
Let the collected parsley seeds dry in an airy place for a few days for propagation.
Then put the seeds in a paper bag or, even better, a bag made of parchment paper. Store the bag in a dry, not too warm place.
Parsley seed will keep for up to three years.
Caution: Parsley seed is poisonous
Once you've harvested seeds from your parsley plants, you should save them with care. Under no circumstances should it be within the reach of children or pets.
The seed contains high concentrations of the toxic apiol, an essential oil that causes severe discomfort due to the contractions of the digestive tract and uterus.
Sow parsley
You can sow parsley in several ways:
- From February on windowsill
- From March outdoors
- Outdoors from August
If you want to grow your parsley on the balcony or window sill, sow as early as possible under favorable conditions.
It is better not to sow parsley for the field until August. Then you will have fewer problems with pests and diseases later.
tips and tricks
Garden retailers offer ready-made parsley seed pots for people who don't have much time. Here the seeds are already sown at the right distance in suitable potting soil. All you have to do is pour according to the instructions and be patient. Within a few weeks, the first peaks will appear and you will soon be able to harvest fresh parsley from the window sill or balcony.
