Many gardeners complain that parsley just won't grow in their home. The seeds do not germinate or very slowly, the plant takes care of itself or even dies. For parsley to thrive, it needs a good location and the right care.

Why isn't the parsley growing?

  • Wrong location
  • Depleted soil
  • waterlogging
  • fungal diseases in the soil
  • care mistakes

Find the right location

The most important point when planting parsley is the right location. It must not be in the dark or in direct sunlight.

Crop rotation is of particular importance. Parsley is highly incompatible with itself and other umbellifers. You must not have grown any other umbellifers on the parsley bed for at least three, preferably four years.

Soil lacks nutrients

Parsley cannot thrive on depleted soil. Enrich it before planting with mature compost, horn shavings (32.93€) or horn meal.

Give an organic fertilizer occasionally, but it must never be fresh.

prevent waterlogging

Parsley is particularly sensitive to waterlogging.

Before planting, loosen the soil deeply and remove all thickened soil. This allows rainwater or irrigation water to drain off better.

Fungal spores and soil creatures lurk in the soil

Parsley often becomes ill because it is infested with soil pests and lice or because fungal spores bother it. You can tell by the white spots and coatings on the leaves. The only thing that usually helps here is cutting or removing the plant.

Caring for parsley properly

In most cases, the parsley is kept too moist. Water sparingly and only when the soil surface is dry. However, the plant must not dry out completely.

If you have parsley in a pot, make sure there are large drainage holes and change the soil if the plant does not want to thrive.

Place the parsley pot in a bright spot but not directly behind a pane of glass.

tips and tricks

Since parsley is often so reluctant to germinate and does not grow well, you should sow a lot of parsley. In larger gardens it can also be worth growing parsley in several places. This increases the likelihood that you will find a really good location.
