With coriander, every balcony is transformed into a Mediterranean spice garden. Here you can find out how to sow the handy seeds directly into the planter. There are also instructions for care in buckets and boxes.

Sowing in the balcony box - it's that easy

Coriander does not like to be transplanted. In order to spare the spice plant the stress, we recommend sowing directly into the planter. The starting date is from the end of March to mid-April. How to do it right:

  • the perfect balcony box is at least 45 cm wide and 25 cm deep
  • Spread a thin layer of grit (46.95€) over the water drain in the floor as drainage
  • Fill in herbal soil or a potting soil-sand mixture and moisten
  • Scatter the coriander seeds and sieve a maximum of 0.5 cm as a light germ

Germination starts within a week in a partially shaded window seat at an ideal temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius. If you place the planter on the still cool balcony, the seeds will take a little longer. Keep the seeds and seedlings constantly moist. If the plant box is tight, select the weaker specimens at a planting distance of 15-20 centimetres.

This is the best way to care for coriander on the balcony

May marks the start of coriander's outdoor season. Now the spice plants want a sunny spot where they should not be exposed to the blazing midday sun. The focus of the care measures is a restrained water and nutrient supply. Coriander copes better with moderately dry soil than with waterlogging. How to water and fertilize the plants properly:

  • water only when the substrate surface has dried
  • fertilize every 3-4 weeks with an organic liquid preparation

If you plant coriander in pre-fertilized soil on the balcony, there is no need to add fertilizer. A mulch layer made of expanded clay (€19.73) is advantageous. This does not release any superfluous nutrients and keeps the potting soil warm and moist for longer.

tips and tricks

If sowing in a planter or pot is too time-consuming for you, you can buy young coriander plants at the market. Simply shorten the shoots to a few centimeters and place the root ball in a glass of water. If the plant sprouts again, plant it in herbal or potting soil.
