A private garden - none. Not everyone is lucky enough to have their own garden and be able to grow lovage there. How about the alternative of giving lovage a new home in a pot on the balcony?

Sow lovage in the pot

If you don't want to buy pre-loved lovage, grow it from seed. Sowing lovage is easy and can be done at home all year round.

Proceed as follows:

  • choose a pot with a minimum capacity of 2 liters
  • fill with herb or vegetable soil
  • cover the seeds lightly with soil
  • water well and keep moist in the following time
  • after 15 to 20 days the cotyledons become visible

Which location is suitable?

You can place the lovage in a pot at home, for example, on the window sill in the living room, in a bright glazed staircase, by the kitchen window, on the balcony or on the terrace. The place should be sunlit.

When growing, a warm living room is recommended to accelerate the germination process. Later the location should be bright and warm. South-east and south-west locations on the balcony or terrace are ideal. If lovage is on the balcony facing south, you have to pay more attention to the moisture environment of the earth.

This substrate is the best!

Herb or vegetable soil is suitable. Potting soil is not recommended due to its high content of artificial fertilizer. Substances that may be harmful to you pass into the plant… Basically, the substrate should have the following properties:

  • nutritious
  • humorous
  • permeable
  • loamy
  • calcareous
  • pH between 6 and 7

What care does the Maggi herb in the pot need?

  • water regularly (even in winter on frost-free days)
  • remove wilted, brown leaves and stems
  • Prevent flowering by regular pruning and avoidance of drought
  • Fertilizer application between April and August every 4 weeks
  • Overwinter : outdoors and not in a warm place like the living room

tips and tricks

Caution: If you have a preferred plant, e.g. B. from the hardware store or supermarket, slowly get the plant used to direct sunlight. Otherwise there is a risk that the leaves will burn from the unfamiliar sun and the plant will die.
