Canna is considered a heavy feeder. If you want to call your own healthy, fast-growing and flowering plants, you should not do without fertilizer. How to properly fertilize this tropical plant!

Period and frequency of fertilization

Already when planting - usually in May - Canna can be fertilized or it is worth adding compost to the potting soil, for example. The last application of fertilizer should be moderate in September.

Fertilizer should be applied regularly until flowering to stimulate growth and create a good base for the flowers. Potted cannas are fertilized every week. For cannas in the outdoor garden, a monthly supply of fertilizer is sufficient.

Suitable fertilizers - in the garden and in the bucket

You don't have to spend a lot of money for healthy canna plants. If your canna is in a bucket, normal flower fertilizer is sufficient. (1.95€) If you have planted your canna outdoors in the garden, we recommend compost or horse manure for fertilising. A gift of horn shavings (32.93€) doesn't hurt either.

As with other plants, the fertilizer should basically contain nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Other benefits include small to medium amounts of:

  • magnesium
  • sulfur
  • boron
  • zinc

Fertilize depending on growth stage

If you have the guts, be sure to fertilize canna according to its growth stage. Before flowering begins (during growth), the cannula needs a lot of nitrogen. Once flowering begins, there should be less nitrogen in the fertilizer.

A moderate application of fertilizer is advisable in September. Then canna should be fertilized with potash. Kali ensures that the rhizomes mature well and can be overwintered better. Alternatively, the rhizomes suck power from the leaves and stems.

tips and tricks

Brown leaves and slacking buds are a sign of nutrient deficiencies. If you've fertilized properly, you'll see healthy canna plants.
