In principle, all plants are suitable for hydroponics, including spider plants. Very few plants tolerate the change from soil culture to hydroponics or vice versa. You should therefore decide on a culture form and then stick with it if possible.

What is hydroponics anyway?

Normally, plants grow in soil that contains organic matter. In hydroponics, however, they are planted in inorganic substrate that cannot support them. It is only used for a stable stand. The nutrition is provided by the irrigation water and a special hydroponic fertilizer.

Plants that have previously been in soil usually cannot be converted to hydroponics, and most do not survive the attempt. The root ball must be completely freed from soil and rinsed thoroughly. It is much easier to try this with young plants or seedlings. The offshoots or offshoots of the green lily are generally well suited for this, especially the rooted ones.

What should you consider when doing hydroponics?

The most important thing about hydroponics is watering, as it is the only way to give nutrients to the plants. Use a special hydroponic fertilizer, it should be added to the irrigation water with every watering. This fertilizer contains all the necessary nutrients and binds excess minerals that are contained in the water, such as lime.

How to deal with difficulties

If your spider plant's roots begin to rot, you need to act quickly. If the water level is too high, cut off the rotten root parts and replant the spider plant. If your spider plant is suffering from a root disease, it is probably beyond saving.

In the future, pay attention to the correct water level and only water your plant when the water level indicator has dropped to zero. Only fill the container with enough water so that the display never rises above the "optimal" display, spider plants do not tolerate permanently wet roots.

The most common problems of spider plants in hydroponics

  • root rot
  • yellow leaves
  • too high water level

tips and tricks

Less is sometimes more! Don't water your spider plants too much or the roots will start to rot.
