From May to autumn, the flowering cane is enviably floriferous and extremely colorful. But what becomes of it when temperatures drop below the thermometer mark? Is it hardy?

The beautiful ones are not hardy
There are canna species such as Canna Lumbautum - a visually less appealing and less common species - that tolerate sub-zero temperatures. But the commercially available types and varieties are not hardy. For this reason, if you want to admire your canna again next year, you must protect it from the frost.
Where can canna be overwintered?
Since this tropical plant is extremely sensitive to ice and snow, it should be given shelter in winter. Overwintering canna outdoors is futile.
Only in locations with mild winters and provided with appropriate protection, Canna could be overwintered outside. It is therefore advisable to find accommodation at home, in the basement or in the garage.
What is the best way to overwinter Canna?
The entire plant, including stems and leaves, can only be overwintered in a conservatory. If you don't have a conservatory, just overwinter the rhizomes.
Proceed as follows with the tubers:
- dig up in late fall
- get rid of the rest of the soil
- place in sand, sawdust or earth and cover with the respective material
- overwinter in a cool place (temperatures between 5 and 10 °C)
- if necessary, water lightly from time to time
When is it time to leave winter quarters?
The wintering of the rhizomes can come to an end as early as January. Then the rhizomes can be advanced. Whether advanced or not, Canna should only be planted outdoors in May. From March it can be placed in a pot on the balcony or terrace during the day and on frost-free days.
tips and tricks
Don't worry if the canna was transported to her quarters too late in the fall and had to endure a frosty night. As a rule, the plant survives a short period of frost.
