Are you fed up with run-of-the-mill daffodils in the vase? How about an interesting alternative, daffodils and their bulbs in a jar? This not only looks effective, but is also sustainable…

Plant daffodils in a glass
First, you should buy one or more daffodil bulbs. You will also need a glass jar and pebbles. It does not necessarily have to be a glass vessel. It can also be a ceramic vessel or other container. The main thing is that it is at least 15 cm high and sufficiently wide.
Half fill the glass with the pebbles. The onions are then placed on the pebbles. Depending on the size of the container, one to five onions can fit in it. The onion tips should be facing up. Leave some space between each bulb to prevent mold.
It goes like this:
- fill with water so that the bottom part of the onions is in the water
- put in a cool place (does not have to be bright)
- after 2 weeks the white root threads become visible
- then put in a bright place z. B. on the window sill
- Flowering starts after 4 weeks
What care is necessary?
- Change water regularly to prevent rot and algae growth
- use soft water
- cut back stems after flowering
- if necessary, add some fertilizer to the water
- after flowering, plant the bulb out in the garden or over the summer
Advantages compared to daffodils in a vase
Daffodil bulbs are available all year round and can always be planted in a glass. Narcissus cut flowers are usually only available in spring. Furthermore, daffodils last longer in the jar, smell more intensively and, by the way, a container can be used that otherwise only gathers dust in the cupboard…
tips and tricks
Since daffodils are poisonous to pets, the jar of flowers should be placed in a place where pets cannot reach.
