Palm lilies are available in different variants as garden or house plants. One of the best-known varieties is the erroneously called Yucca palm, Yucca elephantipes, a fast-growing, easy-care indoor plant that is not related to palm trees.

The right location
Sunny, warm and dry - that's how most varieties of palm lilies like it best. No wonder, because they come from Mexico and the southeastern United States. Other species, such as the candle palm lily, can even withstand frost down to -18 °C. It is particularly suitable for planting in the garden.
However, some species, such as the popular Yucca elephantipes, make excellent houseplants. Here they prefer a bright place, as close as possible to the window. They do not like pent-up heat, so their location should be well ventilated.
The best soil and the right watering
Whether in the garden bed or in the living room - the palm lily prefers loose, sandy and well-drained soil. So, a flower pot should have a drainage layer. It doesn't tolerate waterlogging at all. It also only needs to be watered moderately, although it does not mind a slight lime content in the water.
The propagation
The propagation of the palm lily is quite easy, since it forms offshoots. You can simply remove them and plant them in sandy soil. In summer this can be done outdoors, in autumn it is better to use a flower pot and keep the young plants indoors over the winter.
You can also wait until the plants have small roots before planting. For this time, place the cuttings in a glass of water.
Palm lily pests
The yucca is quite robust and is rarely attacked by pests. However, the lily beetle, a small red beetle, can cause significant damage by feeding on its leaves. Collect the beetles and rinse your yucca vigorously with cold water. If you have a yucca as a houseplant, then watch out for spider mites and scale insects.
The most important care tips:
- as bright a location as possible
- water moderately
- Avoid waterlogging
- avoid excessive heat in the room
