A fern plant creates a tropical atmosphere in the living room, bathroom or anywhere else in the home. This feel-good atmosphere only lasts at the right location and with the right care!

Fern thrives wonderfully as a houseplant at normal room temperatures

Which types are particularly popular?

Many types of ferns can be used as indoor plants. The sword fern is particularly well known and widespread. It is simply feathered and looks enchanting in a traffic light in the bathroom, for example. The following species are also suitable for pot culture:

  • rabbit foot fern
  • goldenspotted fern
  • nest fern
  • box fern
  • maidenhair fern
  • antler fern
  • rib fern

Find a location for house ferns

Most fern species love the usual room temperatures between 16 and 22 °C. Ferns don't do well with a spot in direct sun. The windowsill in the bathroom, in the kitchen and in the living room are ideally suited, as long as these rooms are not in full sun at lunchtime.

Find the right soil

A humus-rich, well-drained substrate best meets the fern's requirements. The soil should be easy to keep moist. Clay granules are ideal. On the one hand, waterlogging has no chance there and, on the other hand, the root ball of the plant does not dry out.

Water and fertilize properly

The fern in the room should be watered regularly. Lime-free water is best for this. If necessary, you should decalcify the tap water before watering. Furthermore, a water mist comes towards the fern. Spray it with water from time to time!

A slow-release fertilizer is ideal to provide the fern with nutrients every two weeks from spring to autumn. You can also use conventional flower fertilizer (€1.95). But beware: use it in half concentration. A shot of milk, which you add to the irrigation water every 2 weeks, is cheaper.

Caution: Dry soil increases the risk of pest infestation!

Some pests like spider mites, aphids and fungus gnats like to eat ferns. You do not have to cut off affected parts. It is enough to clean them from the bugs and adjust the care.

tips and tricks

If you feel like it, you can easily propagate the fern by dividing the root ball. This works particularly well with the border fern, button fern, sickle fern and maidenhair fern.
