Trellis fruit requires a framework to which it is tied. This is how it grows into the intended, flat shape. But while the fruit bears fruit every year, the scaffolding only has to be provided once. If you have a little manual skill, you can easily build it yourself.

The easiest way is to train the trellis fruit using stakes and wire

plan scaffolding

The scaffolding should be based on the trellis shape and also be large enough from the start. Subsequent corrections are not always possible without further ado. There are also longevity considerations to be made here. Some types of lumber weather faster than others.

Build before planting

The young tree gets its first topiary in the first year of planting. The remaining branches need to be fixed in a specific position to train the trellis fruit. That is why the scaffolding is erected first and then planted.

Material for a simple framework

Trellis fruit grows in two dimensions. It is not difficult to build an accompanying scaffolding. Even if several trees are planted, for example as a privacy screen or hedge at the property line, they usually remain in a straight row. You need the following materials from the Bauhaus:

  • one thick, impregnated wooden post for every two meters of trellis length
  • at least two pieces
  • stable wire
  • fastening material

tips

You can also use ground sockets and cover caps that protect the posts from moisture and thus extend their life.

Instructions step by step

  1. Measure and mark the positions for the wooden stakes. Also note that they must later be about 20 cm away from the fruit tree trunks.
  2. Drive in all the stakes one after the other, about 50 cm deep into the ground.
  3. Stretch out the first row of wire at a height of about 50 cm above the ground.
  4. Stretch two more rows of wire, each 50 cm apart.
